The Roots and Blues Hour

March 2018's podcast special
ALT. COUNTRY REVISITED
In the 1990s the term "alternative country" was coined to describe a diverse group of musicians operating outside the mainstream Nashville dominated country music scene. Podcast 297 revisits some of the key recordings that typify the genre of Alt Country.

Featuring Uncle Tupelo

Our journey down the alt. country road initially takes us to Carver County, Minnesota to visit the Hollywood Town Hall.  "Sawdust harmonies and craggy electric guitars" is how one critic referred to this band. From their 1993 album "Hollywood Town Hall" Podcast 297 opens with The Jayhawks.

Podcast 297 concludes with the album considered to be at the foundation of alternative country,  it’s title is often used as a synonym for the alternative country genre after being popularized by the No Depression magazine. After regaining the rights to the album through a lawsuit, Uncle Tupelo released a remastered version in 2003, expanded to include six bonus tracks. That 1990 album?  No Depression.
